Evaluation of Front Cover

For my front cover of my magazine, i believe i did meet the brief proposal ideas, as the colour scheme i set out for my front cover, have worked really well for my magazine design. Throughout the editing i did for my front cover, i think what stood out the most for my magazine was the masthead, as i feel like that will be the first thing that draws the attention to my audience.  The reason why i think my front cover will appeal to my audience is because the first thing that should catch their attention is the masthead, due to me giving it 3D features along with have bright colours and added details to make it more eye drawing. Also, using photos other than just having the main cover image, would also give my audience a tease of what type of content is stored within the magazine. Also, i think the sell lines that i have used for my magazine would be very effective, as most of them are questions to get the audience thinking. 

Double Page Spread Analysis 

For my double page spread, i feel like the overall design for my double page spread, was a success, as i managed to get the colour scheme that i used for my front cover in for my double page spread, along with using the masthead from my front cover to be included in the double page spread for branding. I also think the design overall fits in with my proposal, as i wanted to take inspiration from the Kerrang magazine double page spread by giving it a similar design. Overall i have met the appeal to my audience, as my primary audience for the magazine is the general public who play Snooker, as the entire content placed in the double page spread is dedicated to the public, as my model in the magazine is an amateur player for Snooker, just like most people who play it at local pubs or events.

Evaluation for Contents Page

For my contents page, the design for the page is simple, but effective, as the page itself stores enough detail and information that my magazine needs. The contents page did meet the proposal, as it follows the same layout i had planned out. However, i had to do one improvisation as the font i used on the double page spread and front cover was removed from Adobe and had to find a font that was similar to what the other looked like. My audience would be able to tell from looking at the contents page of my double page spread that the magazine either links to Pool or Snooker. However, since i added the front cover on part of my contents page, reading the masthead on it would instantly inform you that it is a Snooker magazine.

L04: Review of assets

Photos used for magazine Front Cover 

 The photo here will be used on the front cover of my magazine. What I will use this image for is the cover of the magazine along with a cover line underneath it. The reason why I will be using this image, is because without any editing done to it, it already has bright colours due to the lighting used above the snooker table.

The next image I will use on the front cover of my magazine is this image I took during the Snooker World Championships. The reason why I also added content of professional Snooker is to try and add different content for the reader so they aren't stuck on just the general public playing snooker, whereas they can find out the impact professional Snooker has had on others. 

For this image, I decided to try and experiment with taking different angles of shots for my magazine. However, this one stood out the most for me as it looks like you have the perspective of the snooker cue ball on the table, along with also getting to see more detail of the snooker cue itself. 

The image here has the purpose of showing the production side of the interviews and playing of snooker, as we can see cameras and speakers in the background of the photo, that is used to show the production team create the show how we see it live on TV.  The reason why I chose to do this was to get the audience more intrigued in the production side of professional Snooker with what cameras are used to film. 

The image of my model playing snooker will be used as my main front cover image for the magazine. The reason why I have chosen this image is because it includes my model, the snooker table, clear image of the snooker table being used in the photo, additional lighting that can benefit my editing as the table is brighter, along with it being portrait, which helps me from not having to stretch the image out. 

Images for Double Page Spread 

The three images here, are going to be used as secondary images for my double page spread to show off more angles of snooker tables along with where my model is placed. The reason why I have added multiple photos into my double page spread is because I want my audience to focus on more than one detail in the magazine instead of turning the page instantly after reading. 

The image here will be used as my centre image of my double page spread. The reason why I used this image as my main, is because it shows a table with no one playing on it, but we can clearly see that a game has been played due to the break that has happened on the table. The reason why did this, is because I want to use a quote from my model that overlaps the image to give it sense of meaning. 

Image used for Contents Page 

For my contents page i used a close up image of the snooker triangle being used for a game. The reason why I used this image is because it's nice and simple but also stands out due to the detail that is being shown in the image itself.

The reason why these questions would fit well in my double page spread, is because they are simple questions that both the reader can understand, along with the person being asked the question should not have any struggle reading. Also, these questions are easy to expand on when writing into my double spread, as not only can I add the person being interviewed questions, but I can also add my opinion on their response to keep the reader thinking and see who's opinion they agreeing on.

Masthead Designs 

 

The masthead examples of snooker magazines, all have different fonts and colours used, as they aim to appeal a difference to their audience. For example, Snooker Scene and The Chalk both have different fonts and colour scheme, as Snooker Scene used the colours red and blue for their Masthead compared to The Chalk who use black and green. Comparing both of these mastheads, the one I think that is most effective and will attract more people to looks at their magazine is Snooker Scene, due to how unique their masthead is compared to The Chalk, as their font includes different editing styles such as strokes, 3D features along with also using snooker balls as the o's in the name Snooker. The reason why I did not include the others is because the other Snooker Scene and World Snooker both have similar simplistic styles that look less modern compared to the others mentioned. However, the Pool&Billard Magazine looks more like a games title or some form of place you can access on GTA due to the gold masthead and the black backdrop that gives it an impression of luxury, compared to the modern Snooker Scene that looks more inclusive to fans of Snooker and those who play it professionally compared to Pool&Billard Magazine.

For all 3 pages of my magazine, I have made sure that I have saved them all as a secure lossless type, that will not only allow me to print these pages off in high quality but will also allow me to never lose these files. For example, the front cover of my magazine is in a TIFF file type, while the content page and double page spread are in a PNG file format.

Front cover

What my client likes the most about my front cover, is the design of the masthead and the choice of design I have used for the front cover. They particularly like the 3D design I used for my masthead, as it is something more unique than other magazine designs. However, what they think the main image of the magazine could be something more eye catching, as the model of the magazine is on the right side of the magazine, rather than the middle like a standard professional magazine that comes to peoples mind. 

Double Page Spread

What my client likes the most about my double page spread, is the design and structor that I have used to organise the images and content of my double page spread. As the images that relate to one another, are all together, along with having the images edited to have them more brighter. However, what my client did not like about the double page spread, was the use of the colour red that was used on the double page spread, as it apparently messes with their eyes.

Contents Page

For my contents page, what my client likes the most is the main image that I have used. This is because they like how I have edited the colour on it to make the saturation a lot more stronger making the image look more fresh without having the raw image making the contents page look unprofessional. What my client does not like the most about the contents page is the different style of font that was used on the contents page. This was because the original font I used for the front cover that I would have used for the contents page was removed for some reason, hence why I had to try and find a font with a similar style.

How will I apply this feedback 

With the feedback that I have been given, I will use the responses to help me understand from an audiences perspective, on how the magazine should appeal to them, along with being simple to read. For example "The text with gradient black and grey, makes the text very difficult to read." This tells me that I should change it to a more simple font that will my audience to read it more clearly along with potentially adding in a brighter colour instead to make it viewable from a distance.

Codes and Conventions

The size of my magazine is based around what size a normal Snooker magazine would be. The transformation of my magazine has a width of 2573 psi, and a hight of 4574 px.  

I have followed the codes and conventions on my front cover, as I have used contents that relates to my chosen genre of Snooker. We can tell this by the masthead indicating that the magazine is about Snooker, along with the images that are visible on the front cover of my magazine which include a snooker table, ques, que balls, along with my model playing snooker. This allows my audience to know what my magazine is about and what to expect due to the information that is given on the front cover itself. 

For the main cover image i used a portrait image of my model mid way through a round of Snooker.

For the rest of the front cover such as the shapes used around the sell line and cover image, all stay in the same colour coordination that i had planned out to use for the rest of the magazine. The shapes that are used for the magazine are simplistic but still work effective enough to create front cover that i planned out. 

I have followed the codes and conventions for the Contents page as i have put the font size for the masthead in a suitable size for my audience to see. I also made sure i followed the colour pattern from the front cover that i used for the masthead, this also makes it easily recognisable to the audience. Also, i added in text in a white font that explains what is the magazine along with a short snippet of the front cover of the magazine. I also made sure i added in a photo that relates to snooker, as i wanted to carry on having the contents on the magazine to carry on relating to my theme. The reason why i chose to have this photo as the cover for the contents page, is because it shows more content than just having an image of the snooker table from a distance, along with just looking like an image you would see from a distance. 

I have followed the codes and conventions for my double page spread, as i have carried on referencing my theme of Snooker by using images related to snooker along with keeping my masthead from the front cover in with the pages too. Next, i have also followed the same colour scheme that i have been using on the front cover and content page. 

Comparing my front cover to another snooker magazine

Comparing my magazine to a more professional standard one called Snooker scene. For the masthead both front covers have used a shade of blue for the magazine, along with using a 3D feature on the masthead, although it is quite hard to tell on the Snooker Scene magazine. However, for my magazine front cover I took it a step further and added in a much stronger 3D feature to the masthead to make it more modern along with making it stand out to my audience. However, the Snooker scene magazine features 3 different snooker players that have been merged together to create a front cover image, whereas my front cover image only features 1 photo. What I have challenged the most with my magazine is adding in a lot more modern features that would be seen on a magazine today, as I wanted it to show that Snooker is still a popular sport in the modern day. 

Comparing my double page spread to a official double page spread

Comparing my double page spread a professional sports one, includes some similarities, such as text placement, as my double page spread also features text on the right side of the page, along with also being in the same font as the professional one in use. However, my images do not feature the same layout as the professional one. This is because the professional magazine, is in context about two teams rather than focusing on one subject. However, my double page spread focuses on one theme, which is why I used different images to give the reader different perspectives on what they see around them.

Comparing my Contents page to a sport magazine contents page, I have used some inspiration from the content that is on the professional magazine. What I have taken from the contents page and added to mine, is the use of enlarged images to remind the audience what the chosen theme is for my magazine. What I have done differently and that I think is better than the professional magazine is the font colour used on my title. This is because the colour I have used is much more brighter and clear compared to the other magazine using dark red, which might be harder for the audience to see from a distance. 

However, I have used detailed text to talk about what will be included in my magazine, whereas the professional magazine has simplified it, as well as adding the page numbers in bold text and a larger font size than the text.
