L02: Photoshoot plan

 Photoshoot plan

For the images that I will be using for my magazine, have all been taken at the Wombwell Working Mens Club and the Winter Gardens in Sheffield. The reason why most of the photos that I am using for the magazine includes my model getting ready to take a shot, is because it shows that the contents in my magazine actually have events taking place. For the choice of clothing I went with the everyday style someone would wear, as my magazine does not focus on professional snooker. The equipment that was used was my phone with the pro and custom camera settings available. I used both landscape and portrait photography, as landscape was mainly used on wide close ups and being able to get photos of the snooker table at the Sheffield Winter Gardens as I was at more of a distance while I was there. I used portrait for when I wanted to make the snooker table or my model the main focus of the photo. The props that were used for the magazine were a snooker que as in the photos we can see my models holding the que while it is their turn.

L02: Fonts, Graphics, House Styles

The reason why I want to use these types of colours is because, the level of brightness they bring, will make it much more easier for my audience to see. Also, this will allow me to use any sort of editing to my masthead such as adding a stroke with a darker colour.

The next use of colour that I will be using is a dark blue font of colour that I plan on using for the stroke outline of the masthead, to try and illuminate the masthead to allow it to be seen from a distance.

Shapes

For my magazine the following shapes that I am going to use are those shown above. This is because I will be able to use them to full effect on photoshop and create things such as sell lines, secondary images, advertisements, cover images. This will allow my magazine to look more professional by allowing me to use shapes to fit in extra content which will allow my magazine to look more interesting.

L01, Task 2: Sample materials (Visualisation diagrams)

These fit the genre of sports magazines, as i will be using colours that are typically seen on sport magazines such as football, snooker and many more. I will be including an enlarged image for the contents page, that will help show the audience what is included in the magazine.

These fit my genre of sports magazines, as my font cover will feature bright bold colours that will fit the theme of snooker, to make it recognisable. I will also use many photos based around Snooker, as my goal is to also allow my audience to know what the magazine is about without looking at the masthead.

These also fit my genre of sports magazines, as my double page spread will follow the same colour pattern as both my front cover and my contents page. This will keep my magazine constant, as I will carry on using the shapes that will be used on my front cover added onto to my double page spread.

The four different fonts that I used for my magazine are in order from the first one I started of with to the one that made it to the final piece. The reason why I changed the first masthead, was because I had 2 dark colours on top of each other making it hard to be seen from a distance. For my second masthead, I changed the background colour to a dark red with the masthead being bright blue. However, I was still unsure about the size of my masthead. For my third edit of my masthead,  not much was changed other than the size and positioning of the masthead. However, my fourth and final style of my masthead, stands out much greater than the top 3. Not only have I made the masthead brighter, but I have also added a blue outline on the masthead. In addition, I have put an inner glow on the background to try and make the masthead stand out more as it makes the masthead more projected.

L01: Prelim for college magazine

PreLim for college magazine

Examples of college based Magazine Front Cover

From the set of examples from the magazine front covers, all of the magazines have a masthead that can be seen from a distance. For example, the mastheads are either in bold, or have a coloured background opposite to the font of the masthead. Also, the front covers all have college students as the main image. This shows just by looking at the image we can tell its for a college. In addition to this, the magazines have the logos of the colleges they go to for the branding of the magazine. The designs of the magazine all follow a house style of colours that are no more than 3 colours.

What Went Well

What went well for my front cover of the magazine, is that I managed to get the required picture and background needed for my magazine. I also think that the colour scheme used for my magazine matches the UTC colour scheme with the blues and the small parts of green.

What did not go well

What did not go well for me, was I was unable to get a full body shot. However, this is not a major issue as my front cover did not fully rely on it, but it would have been nice to have.

What did I change?

For version 3 of my magazine, the details changed so far, is that I have deleted the fill in the rectangles, as the colours clashed together meaning the text was difficult to see. Next I have added to the sell line of the magazine. The reason why I made it say "THE LATEST UTC MAGAZINE", was because I want my audience to know that what they are reading about is fresh information, and not something written 4 years ago that does not exist now.

What could I change to this version

For my next version, I could try and edit the sell line, maybe reposition it somewhere else in the magazine, and try and more photos to the front cover to try and show what will be covered in the magazine.

How will I do this?

My main idea to add more photos, is to try and get photos of the equipment around UTC. Maybe more media equipment, as I do media so it would be easier to get more for that. However, I could also get engineering in this magazine too, as I know a lot of engineers in UTC so getting information from then will be very easy, I could also get some quotes from them to add to the magazine.

InDesign

InDesign is a desktop publishing program.  InDesign is used to make books and magazines. I will be using InDesign to layout my double page spread, and my contents page.
Collum Gutter- Spacing where one column starts and ends.
Slug- It bookmarks the different articles in your magazine.
Bleed - The allowance you give to your printer to print the pages.

Tools used today

Rectangle tool- used to create frames to add image and text
Text Tool- Used to create text for the magazine
Drop Shadow- Adds detail to the rectangles or what contents are selected.

L04:Evidence of editing and review of assets on Photoshop

Front Cover Editing For Magazine

The image being used for the front cover of the magazine, was edited with an inner and outer glow, to make the image stand out more, by giving it a more up to life preset. This will be effective to my audience, as the brighter colours. It also shows that the magazine and the sport snooker it self has life to it.

The Masthead for the magazine is in a shade of light blue, with a red board behind it. The reason why i picked to have the red and blue masthead for the magazine was to have it link to the snooker balls, as most are red, which is why most is filled with red, along with the blue linking to the blue snooker ball.
The cover image featured on the the front cover of the magazine, features an image that will give us a preview of what is to come on the magazine later on. This done to widen the interest of the reader to make them read further into the magazine.

The sell line for the magazine is following the colour scheme put out for the magazine by having the green, red and blue. The sell line contains the main contents that will feature what the audience will want the most.

The Banner of the magazine is also in a lime green to match with the snooker table and the added inner glow. The banner tells us the year the magazine will be produced (2024). The reason why i kept the UK SNOOKER in the middle of the banner the same colour of the masthead is to keep linking words and details back to the colour scheme picked.

Response of feedback

I will add more contents to the front of the magazines, that will sell the magazine to my audience, I could add a pull line that includes something to do with a rhetorical question related to the impact of women and how their popularity is increasing. Change the colour of the the sell line "Pubs snooker why is it Popular".

The reason why i have added the the sell line for the rise in women to be in black and red, is because I want it stand out to the rest, as it is something different to what is mostly said around Snooker and Pool. This will increase my chances of women reading the magazine and feeling included.

What I like about my front cover for the magazine is how I have designed the masthead, as the use of 3D and the stroke really makes a difference on what the masthead could have ended up looking like if I was to not use the 3D tool and the edits done to the masthead. However, what I don't like is the outlines on the sell lines, as it makes it look cheap and not done properly, if I was to use the fill option that could make the  magazine look more professional.

Double Page Spread

The images here are the latest versions of my front cover, and my dps.  The reason why I changed the colours, was because I believed there was too much green on my front cover and made  it look messy.
Also, the double page spread will continue to be changed, as I am still not certain on the colours being presented.

What I like about the latest version of my double page spread is how I have managed to add in the photos that I planned on using, along with the strong bold headline of the double page spread, that stands out to the rest of the double spread as a whole. However, I don't like the use of dark colours I have used for the background, as it could make some people who are reading the magazine, not feel as much joy due to how ere it looks.

What I like about the contents page on the magazine is the masthead and the background photo. The reason why I like the masthead on the contents page is due to how I have managed to make it looks similar to the masthead on the front cover, and how it just stands out to the rest. The reason why I like the close up of the triangle formation for snooker is due to how the light reflects of the snooker balls along with reflection. However, I do not like the text, as I feel like there is not enough detail on the back, along with the colour of the text as I had no choice but to use white.

The images here are the different versions of the masthead that was used on each version of the magazine. The images show the start of the masthead and how it improved over time. For example, the first image are both dark colours which people would fail to see from a distance. Compared to my last one, which consists of both light and dark, along with an outline on UK SNOOKER to make it stand out more.

Why is the last one better?

The reason why I picked to add the last masthead, is because the style and editing done on the masthead, is more unique and stands out more than the others. The reason why it stands out, is because the colour brightness on the masthead is in a bright blue colour while having a dark blue outline around it to make the masthead brighter. Also, the rectangle used behind UK SNOOKER, was kept dark red, but was later adapted with a bright red inner glow. This gives the masthead a more modern vibe and creative aspect along with it, which could potentially draw in the audience and influence other future work.
